Infectious diarrhea can be caused by viruses, bacteria or parasites. Blastocystis and Dientamoeba are the most common parasites while Entamoeba, Giardia and Cryptosporidium are less frequent.
1 Vial orange 96 reactions Entamoeba (lyophilized)
1 Vial black cap Positive Control (32,000 copies, lyophilized) reagents.
Additional Reagents required
LightCycler® 480 Probes Master
A 173 bp long fragment from the rRNA gene is amplified with specific primers and detected with a Cyan500 labeled hydrolysis probe.
In a clinical study including 744 diarrhea fecal samples the prevalence for Entamoeba was 4%. Sensitivity and specificity of this assay as part of a hexaplex test was 100%, and both PPV and NPV were 100%. Negative results can be considered as true. Since the PPV of other assays for the detection of parasites are less than 100% PPV any positive results may be verified by microscopy.
This particular kit detects E. histolytica as well as E. dispar, which is considered as non-pathogenic.
Consider to use the alternative kit version 50-0611-96 to detect specifically E. histolytica.
This assay detects 10 genome equivalent copies or less per reaction (plasmid DNA dilution).
Sample Material and Extraction
Typical samples are from feces or bacterial cultures. See ModularDx Document Extraction Protocols
