Human parainfluenza viruses (four serotypes hPIV-1-4) are negative strand ssRNA viruses belonging to the paramyxovirus family. They cause flu-like illness; after the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) they are the second main cause of hospitalisation of young children suffering from respiratory illness. Infection of immunosuppressed people can cause severe pneumonia which can be fatal.
PIV-1 and -2 are the most important cause for croup (laryngotracheobronchitis) in children under 5 years. Biennial epidemics starting in fall are associated in particular with PIV-1 (in USA in odd years).
1 Vial blue cap 96 reactions PIV-1 (lyophilized)
1 Vial black cap Positive Control (Cp ~ 30, lyophilized)
Additional Reagents required
LightCycler® Multiplex RNA Virus Master
A 114 bp long fragment from the Hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) gene is amplified with specific primers and detected with a LC640 labeled hydrolysis probe.
This assay detects 10 genome equivalent copies or less per reaction (in vitro transcribed RNA).
Sample Material and Extraction
Typical clinical samples are nasopharyngeal swabs. See ModularDx Document Extraction Protocols.
