Human Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a negative ssRNA virus of the Paramyxoviridae family with two subtypes A and B. Lower respiratory tract infections are the most common cause for pneumonia and bronchiolitis in children under one year. Upper respiratory tract infections are usally similar to the common cold and are mild in adults and older healthy children. In premature babies and infants with underlying health conditions as well as in adults with lung or heart diseases and immune compromised individuals the infection can be more severe. The virus spreads by aerosol and touch.
1 Vial purple cap 96 reactions RSV (lyophilized)
1 Vial black cap Positive Control (Cp ~ 30, lyophilized)
Additional Reagents required
LightCycler® Multiplex RNA Virus Master
A 86 bp (RSV-A) or 105 bp (RSV-B) long fragment from the viral nucleocapsid protein gene is amplified with a mixture of specific primers and detected with a LC610 labeled hydrolysis probe.
This assay detects 10 genome equivalent copies or less per reaction (plasmid DNA dilution).
Sample Material and Extraction
Typical clinical samples are nasopharyngeal, oropharyngeal or throat swabs, tracheal aspirates or bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL). See ModularDx Document Extraction Protocols.
